Wyoming has two of the best places in the United States to view wildlife, Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. There are also other places to view wildlife including Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Wind River Canyon and Indian Reservation and Jackson Hole. There are more then 600 species of animals to be seen here including the grizzly bear, moose, elk, pronghorn antelope, wolf, black bear, bison, bighorn sheep, coyote, and bald eagle.
Most of these animals can be seen from the road (except for wolves) making a trip to Wyoming an experience to see these creatures in their wild and free environment. Bison (also known as the American buffalo) are majestic animals standing 6 feet high at the shoulder and weigh 2,000 pounds; herds can easily be seen in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Don’t get to close because they can run up to 30 miles per hour.
Wolves were introduced in Yellowstone in 1995 and the program has been a huge success with over 300 wolves, which have migrated as far south as Grand Teton. It is hard to see a wolf from the road, however thousand of park visitors each year see them through a spotting scope.
During the winter months, just south of Grand Teton, is the National Elk Refuge Center where 7,500 elk migrate for the winter months. They stay about six months and are fed supplementally by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Visitors can take a horse drawn sleigh ride for a close up look at the herd.
Wyoming wildlife is an adventure that should be experienced, at least once, by everyone.
