Where the Antelope Play

The pronghorn antelope still play in Wyoming. In fact, there are more pronghorn antelope in Wyoming than there are people. Chances are while you’re driving across the state you’ll see some pronghorn antelope roaming across the high plains. You better look fast though, pronghorn antelope are almost as fast as cheetahs. That is not quite true; pronghorn antelope can outrun a cheetah over distance. Pronghorn can maintain 70 mph over a quarter of a mile, can maintain 60 mph for 3 minutes and keep going at 30 mph for up to 5 hours before slowing. Cheetahs can out run a pronghorn for a 100 yards or so, but after that the pronghorn would leave them panting in their dust.

If you spot some pronghorn antelope while driving, slow down. They’re fast and they run in herds. Slow down and enjoy the Wyoming country side, as many as 21 have been involved in one vehicular accident. You’ll enjoy seeing the pronghorn antelope dash across the sage brush covered plains. If one will stand still long enough, take a picture. That will be a trophy you can enjoy a life time.

Pronghorn antelope are mostly a light brown with white on their behind, belly and there are some white slashes on their neck; and of course, the males, and some females, got two pronghorns on their heads. Pronghorn are not really antelope, they are the only living member of the prehistoric family called Antilocapridae. They are a rare treat for your eyes, enjoy them with the rest of Wyoming.
