There is very little that is more relaxing, exciting, and full of wonder to a horse lover than the open country just waiting to be seen from the back of one of the world’s most beloved and regal animals. Once you start riding horses, you rarely lose your passion for them. But horsemanship isn’t as easy as it looks. Avid equestrians know that the horse life takes a lot more than just throwing on a saddle and hitting the trails.
Movies make it look easy, but the truth is, there are many things to learn about this beautiful animal before you are ready to ride. Other than the tremendous cost of owning a horse, the biggest consideration for all riders, is safety. First, establishing trust between horse and rider is key, so get to know your animal. Most pleasure riders will be riding to see the country and mountain side, so safety in trail riding is a big concern.
Once you’ve established a friendship with your animal, you need to be sure that you have maintained good, solid tack. Fit is essential as well, for both the comfort and safety of horse and rider. Wearing a helmet is also a good idea. While on the trail, it’s important to pay attention to your surroundings. Be aware of everything. Educate foot and bike travelers on how to behave around your horse. Use your voice and let them know you are coming. Travel during the day, and with a friend. Accidents happen quickly, and you will need all the support you can if one happens to you. With knowledge, confidence, and practice, you will have many enjoyable, thrilling, and most of all, soul soothing rides.
